Somebody hit the ground on Loose Ends this passed Sunday. We were on the third pitch of Fat City when it occurred and stuck around to make sure they didn't need us to rap down and help out. It sounds like parties on the ground had everything under control, but when we got down we noticed a lot of blood on the ground. Does anyone know if the climber is ok?
She was on Pear Butress at the run-out start. We were on top of P1 of J-crack. I heard her slide and looked down just in time to see her hit the ground. It was shocking and all I could think was Holy Shit is she OK!!! I yelled down to them that we had a cell phone in our bag... The woman who fell was with a large group of friends who all rushed to her aid. One girl rapped off her route and pulled the ropes leaving all her gear behind to assist. It was dramatic to say the least. We didn't come down, there were already alot of people at the base helping and from what I understand her belayer was a nurse. . .
It sounded like she was more or less ok but, definitely hit her head. She was wearing a helmet which, I am positive prevented this from being worse than it could've been. She did get up and walk out under her own strength so I believe she'll be ok!!!
To the fallen climber. . . If you are reading this I hope you're feeling better and heal up quickly!! You obviously one tough girl to shake that off and walk out !!!
Hope the climber is ok and feeling better. That start scares the @#%^% out of me. It's slippery and is a sandbag. I'm surprised it doesn't claim more victims.
Thanks, Rich. I hope that she is ok. Sounds like the blood on the ground was probably due to the head injury - they tend to bleed a lot. The guys next to us said they saw her walk out, so that seems like a good sign.
Yup, I hope this person is ok and recovers quickly.
As someone pointed out, that start is a serious head game. I've never thought of it as a sandbag though. I think it's rated as 5.7 and, imho, feels comperable to other Lumpy 5.7 face routes. But yeah, the complete lack of pro for the first 30 feet or so really make it much more challenging than a well protected (or even poorly protected) 5.7.
Hey, Matt . . . Chris and I were on Fat City just below you two . . . I was belaying him on the 1st pitch and heard the events unfold. Pretty great how many people were ready and willing to drop everything (except parties climbing) and help out if needed. I was the one who climbed through the roof on Fat City and decided to blow the move just below the horizontal jug without placing gear after the roof. Quite a ride.
