Fake Nepal Evo GTX?

Original Post

Hello all,

I just bought a pair of the La Sportiva Nepal Evo GTX boots in anticipation for an upcoming trip to Mount Rainier. Anyway, the boots seem to be legitimate in all but one regard: the color of the leather is beige rather than the bright yellow featured in ALL of the pictures I can come across. I live in Hungary and bought these boots from this store, which has a picture of the boots: mountex.hu/termek/70101-181…

Could this just be a regional variant of color, or are these boots frauds?

Thanks in advance

Contact La Sportiva and ask them.

They look ok to me. The woman's version is kind of greenish-gray. Same boot though. Also, even the men's boots aren't really yellow or don't stay that way for long.

Women's boots can be seen here:

Take a look at the lasportiva.com site. The men's Nepal Evo GTX is yellow and the women's Nepal Evo GTX appears to be identical in colour to the one you provided a link to.

I don't know about Jim's, but mine are quite yellow. That said, the rest of the colors in that picture are somewhat off to, so it might just be a bad image.

A long time ago in a land far far away...

There were two Nepals. The Extreme which had Gore-Tex plus Thinsulate Insulation and was yellow. Then there was the Top which only had Gore-Tex without any insulation and was tan. That looks like the last edition of the Nepal Top Evo. The Nepal Top Evo was available on the euro site until recently.

Mystery solved. No applause necessary.

The Top was a version of the Nepal Extreme and was discontinued when LS introduced the Nepal Evo. There was never a Nepal Evo Top.

Hey Ray,
The Euros continued to carry the Nepal top until a couple of years ago. It was discontinued here in the states though. Don't you trust me when it comes to gear by now?

And I say again, mystery solved. Thanks for reading.

Had to. You made it a point of pride.

To the OP, if you think you may need a winter boot, I would return those for the yellow Nepals. If you are doing Rainier in August, you can probably get away with a thicker sock and winter insole with the Nepal Tops. Hope that helps.

Even though I don't speak a word of any Finno-Ugric language, it's clear that, while the picture on that site is of the Nepal Top (Evo), the description is of the Nepal Evo GTX. I wonder what it says on the box the boots came in.

Your new boot is warm enough for most any winter climbing any other single boot is capable of. Just fit them correctly..no extra socks or insoles. You'll be fine. It is a great mountain boot and better/more durable than most. One of the most popular in Europe.

Here is a bing translation of your web page..
"Winter mountaineering, climbing, it is recommended to mix icefall, durable, warm mászóbakancs. Gore-Tex ® lining waterproof and breathable thanks to the full. The boots are the perfect fit for comfort, removable, and the patented fûzésrendszer. Talpszerkezetében, under the Impact of the heel Brake System allows the damping of vibration on hard surfaces. High körbegumizás suede upper protects your damage as well.3.2 mm water repellent Suede, breathable Gore Tex lining the ankles are flexible snowremovable"

So is there any significant difference in the insulation from these and the new ones? If so, is it a huge difference? Also, the box said "Nepal Evo GTX natural", which really has me confused. I am a bit concerned that these are inferior to the newest rendition of the Evo GTX, but don't want to return them until I know so. BTW, thanks for the plethora of replies.

At this point your best bet is to ask La Sportiva if the "Nepal Evo GTX natural" only differs from the "Nepal Evo GTX" in color. The word "natural" obviously refers to the tan hue of the leather.

Hugarian is hard, but Bing did a good job. Here are the missing words: mászóbakancs=climbing boots, fûzésrendszer=lacing, Talpszerkezetében = boot sole, körbegumizás = rubber rand.

Anyway, looked at the web-page, and it doesn't specifically mention if it is insulated or not, besides that it's a "warm climbing boot". The Gore-Tex liner is mentioned, but not whether it's insulating or just water-proofing. In either case the description reads almost exactly like the English descriptions of the boots.

The store is legit for sure. My friends and I have bought a bunch of stuff from them over the years.

If you are really loosing sleep over it, I could be persuaded into giving them a call and asking if it has any insulation in it.

If it was the yellow Nepal evo then it would have the Hungarian words for Gore-Tex Duratherm. Also, check the words that cross eachother on the lining. If it has Duratherm, then it will say it.

They are clearly the Tops. As Dane said great all mountain boot. But if you were expecting something really warm, look elsewhere.

I'm no expert but the boots on the Hungarian site still look like Evo GTXs to me. Just a different color. I would contact Sportiva if you are concerned.

Some of the above posts link to boots that are the same color but clearly different boots.

Aren't these the Tops?

web.archive.org/web/2012111…

And these the GTXs?

kletterschuhe.de/de/Bergsch…

Same color but different boots (look at the cuffs).

If I'm wrong, I apologize for the further confusion.

I'm thinking this link will solve the problem ONCE AND FOR ALL.

vysota.com.ua/dealers/La_Sp…

Go to page 48. The Nepal Evo GTX is clearly shown, with the "natural" model featured behind it. The brown boot is identical to mine. To me, these boots appear to be the same model, only different color.

Ah Hell, if I knew I could get em in tan instead of bright ass yellow.
