I get it, REI will match AF donations. Getting a popup every third page is a little ridiculous. I'm just about ready to stop adding content here if I can't navigate without endless popups.
Okay... I cut it in half (every 30 page views now). Two things though:
- As we'll announce next week, it's really working. The donations and new memberships are AWESOME since starting these things.
- As someone said elsewhere, consider this the pledge drive for public radio. It's irritating, but it's a small price for a good cause, and it has an end date in the near future (June 30).
I like the wikipedia model where there is a big banner on some (every?) pages prompting for donations, but the banner will go away after you donate. This gets a donation from me most years. The popup is a bit too invasive, especially if it doesn't leave if you've donated. Maybe the technology isn't there yet.
Now that the view/popup has been decreased it's more manageable, thanks.

If the popup were the only thing driving the increase in members I would agree with your logic. But I joined the Access Fund not based on the pop-up, but based on the forum discussion about REI hosting MP. The banner advertisement on the side was sufficient.

Have people nothing better to do than gripe about a pop up that benefits the climbing community? Click on it and it's gone! Over and done. One second of your life you won't get back! Is that too much to ask to help with climbing access issues?
Of course these people will probably also be the first to want the Access Fund's help when their local climbing area is threatened for some reason.
