Getting There Suggest change

See approach GPX trail for main area on the map. The approach described by Busse and Burr for Elkhorn Mountain is no longer ideal due to significant deadfall on the old roadbed used to access Trail #5. Instead, access Black Elk Peak Trail #9 North by using a small pullout along Highway 244 (GPS 43.899999, -103.527936). Follow an old roadbed for a short distance to intersect the Willow Creek Loop trail #8, take a left and follow this until it forks with Trail #9N to the left. Finally, keep right when #9N intersects with Trail #5. Head uphill and the trail will deposit you right in the middle of an impressive cirque that is Elkhorn Mountain.
