Description Suggest change

The Electromagnetic Crag is a small but steep conglomerate crag reminiscent of Maple Canyon and its neighbors, the Devils Punchbowl and Texas Canyon. The crag has shade all morning till 2:30 pm, good most of the year but too hot in summertime. There is one trad dihedral 5.10d and the sport routes are steep and fun, varying from 12a to 13a and are between 50 to 65 ft tall.

Unlike the near by domes of choss the rock is really clean and surprisingly solid thanks to so cal edison. There are large electric transmission lines running over head that connect to a tower mounted on top of the crag. When edison was drilling the caseons years ago they vibrated a huge chunk out of the dome like a quartered slice out of a grapefruit revealing clean rock. Despite the electric lines the hang is quiet and tranquil with a sweeping view of the Santa Clara River and Angeles Mountain Range; also there is a movie ranch near-by where they house and train lions - you WILL hear their roars and growls throughout the day.

Getting There Suggest change

Its about a 40 minute drive from the San Fernando Valley. From the San Fernando Valley there are two ways: longer, take Hwy 14 north to Acton, exit Crown Valley, go 1.6 miles then left onto Soledad Canyon and go right. Drive on Soledad Canyon for 3.3 miles then park on the left side of the road. Walk cross the road and find the faint trail taking you up a steep hill and passing the 25 ft light bulb shaped rock feature on your left. When you reach the top of the hill aim toward the Edison service road, conjoin with it and follow it to the right as it loops around to the right. The crag is an open book feature and is visible from the parking spot on the road. The hike is 25 to 30 minutes and the first half is a bit steep.

You can also take Soledad Canyon from Valencia (exit just past the In-n-Out Burger) and it might shave off 5 to 10 minutes of driving. From the exit go right drive about 9.6 miles to parking on the side of the road. Refer to photo below for trail details.
