Clear Creek

I will be in Spain approx Jan 21-Jan 31 and I'm looking for partners for sport limestone in El Chorro! I will have rope & draws, lead 5.11+. Me gusta cerveza.

I'm also interested in any logistical info on the area -- where's the best place to stay? what are the best walls? best restaurantes? Any other info? Thanks!

Cathy, I've been climbing in El Chorro for a couple of weeks. First, the El Chorro guidebook from Rockfax is very useful. Buy it before you come.

For accomodations, you can try La Almona Chica, where I'm staying. There are 4 cottages here that are decent. You'll have plenty of privacy. It's run by Brit expats. Talk to Susan: 952-11-98-72 or www.holiday-rentals.co.uk/Spain/Costa-del-Sol-Malaga/holiday-cottage-Alora/p2678.htm

The Olive Branch is a more social/communal place with a hostel atmosphere. You'll likely find climbing partners here. Also run by Brits: www.olivebranchelchorro.co.uk/

The eating options are very limited. El Chorro is tiny village. The upscale place, La Garganta has a bright and cheery atmosphere, good food, and poor service. You can get a good slice of tortilla/quiche at the train station bar. Without a car, you won't go much further.

If you plan on making you own food, bring what you don't want to do without. The little grocery here is very limited. Again, a car will help. I recommend you bring some peanut butter, some parmesan cheese and some soy sauce. You won't find those items here.

Best walls: Los Albercones- Excellent rock, long single pitch routes, easy access. Often crowded.

The Solarium- Good views, lots of sun.

Escalera Arabe- Magnificent setting, multi-pitch options. Great place to be at sunset.

If the weather cooperates, you love it here. We've had many rain days and the wind here can be a hinderence. It's worth taking the chance, of course.

Hope you enjoy your trip.

I stayed in Finca too. Cheap funky but clean. Nice common area. Climb over the Kings walkway.

Try posting on ukclimbing.com for partners. Brits are always trying
to escape their climate. There is a forum for "Rock destinations" on
that site.

Not sure about the availability of the Rockfax guide (out of print?).
If it's not available, contact me and a I can lend you a copy.

Have fun
Adrian

I will be in Barcelona January through the beginning of May. I know that's not close to where you'll be, but if you head up this way let me know! I can lead, but can only climb sport and boulder. I would love to meet up with someone.

Hey Cathy, let me know if you got a partner. It might be possible for me to come down there rather cheaply, but it'd have to be the 29-31.
