I a leading a group of HS students to Zion in early June. Skills range from no experience to some who can lead 5.10 sport. We have no multi-pitch experience and little trad. I am looking for a place in Zion where I can put some on bouldering and others on easy, single pitch, sport climbs, within shouting distance of each other. I am also not too proud to walk around the back of a trad climb and set a top rope from above - just to get everybody a workout. Is there such a place where we can put these together?

Nothing in Zion fits that description, but there are plenty of crags in nearby St George that would work. Black Rocks, Chuckawalla Wall, and Crawdad Canyon would all be good places to start.

Definitely check out Crawdad Canyon. River to swim in, food nearby, and no one is going to get pissed if you show up with a big group and throw a bunch of ropes up. Plus everything is bolted pretty safely. You will have to pay to get in, but it is less than the cost of a movie ticket and worth the convenience.

No bouldering in Crawdad that I am aware of, but you can always make a trip to Moe's Valley.

Green Valley Gap has a few boulder problem, but nothing worth making the trip for. Some decent, but very short sport problem. The moderate climbing is all south facing, so in June you might get heat stroke.

Nearby to Crawdad is a pretty good multi-pitch spot called Prophesy Wall. It gets morning shade, is chock full of easy sport climbs, rarely has traffic, and has free camping. Good place to learn rope work or just crag.

Black Rocks is closed until July 1st.

Zion is about the opposite of what you are looking for, but there is plenty of good stuff in St. George. Have fun with the HSers.

"Rock climbs of southwest utah and the arizona strip" would be your guidebook to check out for st. george. Its good you asked ahead of time. I've had several parties ask me similar questions after they are in zion

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
