The right of way for the railroad extends 50 feet on either side of the tracks, so while walking next to the tracks is likely safer, from the point of view of the railway it does not necessarily provide a solution. Ideally climbers should avoid being near the tracks whenever possible. We're requesting that climbers use alternative approach trails when it makes sense, such as in the case of the Frankenstein Cliff trail. If you do need to use the tracks, we want people to be aware of the situation, and to try not to spend excess time on them.
Description
Honestly, the lower routes on the East Face of Mt. Willard aren't the best but you need to get above them to access much better climbing on the upper tier.
Lower Hitchcock Gully (Lower) is often a mixed climb so Left Hand Monkey Wrench sees most of the traffic and there is often a wait. If you continue traversing right past LHMW about 75 ft, you'll reach the LHMW Bypass -- a big flow of low-angle ice/snow that will get you to the upper tier in 2 pitches of climbing and 1 pitch of steep trail. You'll end up right at the start of The Cleft.
