How safe is it to drive from Laredo to Hidalgo? I've heard mixed reports, so anyone done this recently?

I haven't done it since 2004, but then the trick was to drive only during the day and take the toll road. It was perfectly safe then, I'd still do it probably, just get away from the border as quick as you can. Also (this probably goes without saying) it's best to take a reliable car, preferably something that will handle rough roads reasonably comfortable as well. If you don't find what you want here check RC.com I know EP ed is usually around there.

Ive gone the past two years with no issues just cross the border in the morning and defidently take the toll roads.

I've done that drive several times in the past two years with no problems. Don't drive at night and stay on the toll road.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
