The original settlement later became abandoned, opening the park to witches, vegabonds, and feral dogs. Dogtown is a strange place for sure. There have been several books (fiction and non-fiction) written about the place. There was also a famous murder here in the '80s. In summer months in the quieter parts, there is a decent-sized homeless population. Sometimes you find them staring back at your through the trees. It can be a little unsettling.
Probably safer than Lynn Woods though!
