Hi folks, I haven't been to Deep Creek before but am probably heading that way tomorrow. Before I opt to bring my hounds along, I wanted to check on a few facts (i.e. whether you love/hate dogs at the crag is not a fact).
1) The approach description mentions a couple of climber's trails, do these include any fixed ropes or 4th class that dogs couldn't do?
2) With the added attention, is the crag getting relatively crowded?
3) Is there ample space to leash dogs off the trail and out of people's way while climbing/belaying? If so, are these places relatively poison ivy free?
Dogs are fine there. It's a chill hike with a small creek crossing, that, depending on water levels can be really easy or pretty epic. I can't imagine it's bad right now with the lack of rain we've had. DC doesn't usually get crowded til the summertime oddly enough...and with the new route development there, the crowds are way more spread out than in years past. There is also plenty of room to leash your pups if you need to.
I will also mention that you should go to seclimbers.org, go to the Deep Creek page and read the rules...after reading, check the box, submit and get the code for the gate. Without that, you can't get into the parking area! Have Fun!
