Do you loan out gear?
I've had some friends ask to borrow gear. Trad, ice, etc. I mean, I get it, not all of us can scratch it together. But, it's really expensive. Not to mention - you don't know exactly what happened to it when your not there to see it used. I've loaned gear in the past to good friends, now I'm starting to get ambivalent. |
Yep. Do I get it back... Not usually. But I loan it out to friends who are doing pretty legit stuff, much more impressive than what im doing, so I feel like it's a good cause. I would really like my rain jacket back though.... |
I like to think that a few of my slings and biners ended up on top of here... |
depends who .... some people are responsible and you know will replace it right away if anything happens |
i have but do you ever feel guilty for getting mad that your buddy just took a whip on your brand new cam and yes it held and yes hes ok and yes we are gana climb agian next week but come on man that cam was brand new and now the stem is cranked to shit start placing nuts!!!!! |
Among my close climbing friends, yes 5 and 6 BD Cams for sure. Everyone does not need to own these. |
Yup. All the time. |
The thing about loaning out gear.. well in my experience is the person asking needs whatever because they don't know what the f*ck they're doing. It would be nice to situation where the person in question was a good climber and just needed doubles of something. Those friends of mine have more gear lying around then I do! I get the ones who want to borrow screws or cams but they very little experience leading. I'm not contributing to someones injury or worse.. |
Yes but only to close friends and not some stuff - harness, ropes, avy beacon, helmet, newer stuff. But other stuff, sure. |
Sure. You're welcome to anything I got on me for the next pitch. |
If I'm gonna be at the same cliff with them, sure. And they'd reciprocate. But lend gear to somebody to go to (FIll-In-The-Blank, far far away)? Nah. Either weird shit would happen, which we all know is possible and/or likely, or something could/would get stolen. Murphy's Law is harshly enforced, especially when you're not looking. |
Only if they've been a climbing partner with me previously and we've done at least some leading together because chances are they've already used my gear and i've seen firsthand how they use it. |
Thanks for the replies. It's good to see others loan out gear with the same reservations I have. Now I don't feel like a jerk. |
Yes, but only to those who I climb with (which is a small circle). I trust them with my life when we climb together so I trust them to take care of the gear that will keep us alive the next time we go out. |
I dont mind loaning out metal, but I'm pretty protective of my soft goods |
I have and will loan gear to my close friends. They only get one chance to purchase any gear that was adversely damaged under their care. |
I am happy to loan out cams and hardware to friends. Never had an issue getting them back, but I have always asked that if a piece is damaged or lost it is replaced. |

Allan Campbell wrote: So, do you loan out gear? Yes/No? - please give a reason why. ThanksYes, I often do. I own a lot more gear than several/many of my climbing buddies, mostly because I'm quite a bit more gainfully employed than they are. So, yup, I definitely have loaned out, rope, draws, trad rack, etc. |
