Last weekend you needed high clearance for sure.

George, maybe you went today but if not, here's a report from yesterday, 9/20/2013:

The road was closed at the last cattle guard before the main Diablo parking area. We drove around the barrier but it was obvious why it was closed. There's no way you'd make it w/ 2wd, tough even w/ 4wd. Deep sand on the road.

Still the same this morning - closed at the cattle guard.
Keith and I didn't poach it and turned around then went to the Dungeon
I'll try to drive out and take a look again later on in the week so I can get out there next weekend

Yup
supposedly according to county people the road is open but they said the workers forgot to take the signs down. The signs were still there Sunday(9/28), road was in good shape but the sandy section near the Shack parking is pretty deep. All wheel drive is probably OK but low clearance out near the Shack could be tough. Maybe park several hundred feet before the Shack parking. That deep sand would be though for low clearance cars trying to do the regular Cockscomb parking/approach as well.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
