Devils Lake Centennial Climbing Challenge

This year Devils Lake is celebrating 100 years as a State Park. The Hoofer Mountaineering Club would like to encourage climbers to take some extra time this year to enjoy the beautiful Baraboo quartzite around The Lake.

We have three categories of climbing challenge: top-roping, bouldering, and lead climbing. If you are feeling really ambitious, enter all three! Open to anyone who climbs.

The challenge is to climb 100 different routes during 2011. Participants should log their climbs (date & route name) and report them to us. Those who complete the challenge will receive some sort of recognition (the details have not been worked out yet; check hoofermountaineering.org later ). If you would like us to chart your progress, send us your partial list.

For those who enjoy more competition, we will recognize the three individuals in each category with the most impressive 100-climb list. (Scoring will be based on Swartling & Mayer’s Climber’s Guide to Devil’s Lake, and MountainProject.com.)

Geez, that seems a modest challenge. I remember belaying Eric Zschiesche for ten or fifteen laps the day he did 100m laps on Sometime Left. I gotta believe most regulars have done that, and quite a lot more, most years.

After reading Doug's post here, I started compiling my list last night from my recolection of routes I have already done in 2011 at DL (TR, Boulder, Lead, winter &%^*&-tool'n) and I am well over 60 already just in TR, Lead catagories. Doug told me there is a challenge by the Park organization to hike 100 miles of the park trails (coming with a certificate from the Park as well when submitted)and that sounds a bit a challenge. I think for local climbers the competitive option Doug lays out may be the one that stirs and attracts.

Not 100 climbs, 100 diffrent routes. :P

If someone wants to get out and climb 100 different 5.4s, they will see a lot of the Lake and they'll know why we all love the place. That would be a great way to celebrate 100 years of Devils Lake.

On the other hand, it will be interesting to see what some of you regulars can come up with for a 100-best-of-2011 list!

(If Eric Zschiesche is our standard, then most of us are modest climbers.)

I propose that someone (like me) volunteer to drink a 100 beers at the Lake within the summer time frame. Who else is up for that?

Might have to change my plan of attack here. I've been to DL 5 times so far this year (nothing compared to some, I know) and I think my total for routes and boulders combined is <10! On one of those days, I didn't send anything.

Must. Climb. More.

How's this for a dream ticklist?

mountainproject.com/scripts…

With allowances of course for not being quite strong enough (no where near strong enough) for some of the hardest ones on there.

If you allow toproping stuff I ought to go back and lead (questionable) I've done just over half of these over the last 3 years or so.

100 over the entire summer? Have standards slipped that far? Oh sorry I just saw that this is a Hoofer-sponsored challenge- 100 is a stretch goal then.

100 beers over an entire summer???? That is SOOOOOO WEAK. thats like maybe 3 days consumption fer an experienced fuk-nes clubber. actually fer old Bill russell thats like a day and a half. now puke.

My apology....it IS a weak number for that much time. Guess I gotta up the total or reduce the time limit to make it respectable. I'm sure there will be a royal club celebration sometime too, in honor of the 100th anniversary.

Maybe 100 bottles of whiskey would be better....

Actually as you can tell my mind was focused on the important stuff...the consuming of mass qquantities of swill. On further reflection the challenge of climbing 100 routes at DL over an entire summer is also VERY WEAK! But it is the hoofers.
New challenge.....100 routes and 100 beers(cheap swill is okay but not non-alcholic) in 3 days. Climbing that many routes in 3 days should be a peice o cake....the swill??? puke? peace etc.

Sounds like a typical club DL outing in the late 70's for sure.

How about 100 different 5.8 leads at the Lake? That would take you to some interesting and difficult routes.

This thread reminds me of a day not too many years ago when Dave Groth and I set out to do as many top rope problems as we could in one day that were at least 5.10. I only got to 19, but Dave matched me 2 for 1 and did 38. We were gonna try again another day for more (he thought he could make 50 routes), but it never happened. This idea seems interesting, but leave the numbers open ended. Also, conjoining the routes and the beers seems like the only acceptable option.

One climb, one beer, one mission.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
