While it is a shame that Dan passed, and I remember it, it's difficult for me to heap praise on someone who took unnecessary risks with a child at home. Sorry but when you have children, as my ex told me, your life is not your own.

I definitely toned it down after my daughter was born.

The thing that gets me about Osman is he could do amazing stuff like this

but he died seeking an adrenaline fix by jumping off cliffs tied to dynamic ropes. What a waste of talent...

Seeking an adrenaline when you have a child at home is completely selfish. I stayed around for my daughter and we're both really glad I did.

As for accomplishments, they don't impress in so many ways. What kind of person you are and how you take care of your fellow human being, especially your children does.

And talent is everywhere. If you want someone I admire, it's Wolfgan Gullich; unbelievably talented, bold, ahead of his time and kind to everyone he met, whether they climbed at the very highest level, or were doing easy routes for the enjoyment. I've seen him get excited for someone waxing about an easy route because they were psyched.

If you find and watch the video of DO soloing The Gun Club (NRG) and you do not getting sweaty palms, check your pulse, you might have none. At one point he was clearly in trouble, and it was obvious he was not able to reserve the sequence, so he had to "go for it". I have not watched any of the more recent videos of Honnold, etc mostly because of the Gun Club video.
Frank, I remember you talking about your girl whenw e met. She must be in her mid(?) twenties now. I know what you are talking about above, now that I have one of my own. She is almost 10.

It does change things, or at least it should. Glad to hear you're a dad. I didn't think anything could be more fun than climbing, but being a dad sure was/is.

My daughter's now 27, has her Masters degree, is married to a great guy, and is head of the business department at a H.S. in New Jersey. She's still a daddy's girl too. I hope you love being a dad as much as me.

I never understood this. Bachar, Potter, Hunt, Osman, Honnold...? When guys like this this die it's never a surprise. Push the envelope long enough and the math cathes up with you. I watch them in awe to be sure but I do not idolize them.

Which crystal ball shows the better way for DO? Maybe the one that specializes in cookie cutters.

Different people have different levels of acceptable risk. Always has and always will be that way.

Will Gadd had an interesting post on his blog a while back about a similar subject dealing with climbing and having kids. It was quite interesting.

It's not online yet; but was in an old school NRG video. I believe Jay Smith took the footage; Osman was not feeling "on" on that day, it was hot, humid, and Gun Club is incredibly insecure, balancy, and technical.

I did the route this past weekend, and was gripped just thinking about someone soloing it.

That's your view of course and you have a right to it, but mine is that he was a selfish egotist who didn't have the moral strength to put aside his wants for his daughter. And the lame excuse I've heard saying that his daughter wanted him to keep doing it is ridiculous. She was too young to make that kind of judgment.

Paul do you know the name of the video?? And moreover, if anyone in Fayetteville has it? Old school NRG video sounds really promising.
