Cleopatra's Needle @ Devils Lake Wisconsin. This photo was taken perhaps at the turn of the century by legendary lanscape photographer H.H. Bennett.
If the photo is not "doctored" and I have no reason to believe it is it shows a fairly bold ascent. The easiest route up Cleo's is rated 5.4. Today a "ring" is at the summit for a rap off. I detect no rope in this photo so we are looking at an exposed down climb.
Kinda Cool!

Current Beta Page for Cleo's on MP. Perhaps our climber soloed the Northeast Comfort Route(?)

Awesome, Peter!

Have you seen "Three On A Rope," It featured climbing in Tahquitz in the 1930s? What an inspiration these bold, early climbers were! ; )

Edit: I noticed your thread is listed in "General Climbing", and not in the Midwest forum, so I thought it would be okay to throw a little Cali climbing history in. : )

Pete: mail sent with info. Keep posting the black and white stuff from DL that you found at the Wisc. state website, or give us a link to search it out ourselves.

Cool old shot!

Here is my dad on the summit of Symmetry Spire, mid '50's.

And here he is on the summit of the Grand after a FA on the east face with Bill Cropper, late '50's.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
