Confronting litterers at Rumney

I was at Hinterlands this past weekend and was climbing near a party of visitors and noticed a girl from their party had walked about 15 feet away from the belay area behind a large boulder that other people also pee behind, urinated, wiped herself with toilet paper, and then simply dropped it on the ground. I saw the TP when I went behind the same boulder to urinate. I admonished her for this, stating that it was littering, to which she replied, "its biodegradable". I picked up an empty plastic bag they had left on the ground, picked up her pee stained trash with it, and placed the bag with her belongings, stating, "here's your tp." She got the message enough to pack it out with her.

What would you havd done?

You watched her pee? Sounds kinky!

If it was trash I would have said pick it up. No blind rage. Ain't no fucking way I'm letting some girl know I watched her pee, witnessed enough to know she left paper on the ground then go over and tell her pick it up. Laughed at her lack of ability.. Lame.

You gotta be a female. You would be typing this from a hospital bed if you're a man and told my wife or any female partner that.

Unfort not uncommon at the beautiful Rumney. Go around the corner from Clipadeedoodah and it's always piles of used TP (the same climbers trail used for the down climb). People are just oblivious to the idea they should be packing it out. I don't know the best way to approach folks about it, but saying something in a friendly, approachable manner seems appropriate.

Same thing. I was in Yosemite a couple weeks back, and a gentleman was toproping through the fixed anchors. I politely told him that it wasn't ethical to do that in California, and for most of the world for that matter. He quickly went back up and used his own gear for the anchor.

For the lady piss, I wouldve done the same thing. Good job handling that crap(piss)!

TP, cigarette butts, wrappers, etc are litter. If nature didn't put it there, pack it out.

No one should be TR'ing through chains anywhere. Anchors with biners are fine as they're intended for the purpose (easily replaced).

Saying something is always better than not.

Was camping with some friends this weekend and one of my female friends said the same thing. She honestly didn't know any better. I explain that it turns into a disgusting plaster of paris type material, and is generally an eyesore.

Sometimes people suck, but other times it's about educating them to the proper protocol. I grew up in the scouts so I knew this stuff, but not everyone does.

No, I didn't laugh at her lack of ability. I was presenting that as an optional reaction. Also, I am a dude.

Pissing is one thing..leaving behind Tp ot whatever is another.

Pick up the TP and throw it in her face..that should get your point across ,people are way to PC about litter

Or you would be in a hospital. Why are you so sure you would win that fight? Alpha bravado is so last year.

Definitely speak up, and thank you for doing so. Unfortunately, I think a great percentage of the toilet paper left around is from women doing the same thing. It is amazing to me, but a lot of people really are that ignorant. I was complaining about people doing that after running into it to an acquaintance at Rumney and she admitted to doing the same thing, with the same excuse that it was biodegradable. I was a little dumbfounded at how out of it she was, but glad at least she admitted it and seemed to get the picture after discussing it. You would kind of think somebody should have been able to learn from just seeing a few clumps themselves that leaving it out on the ground is disgusting and not a good idea.

And yeah, it is pretty easy to tell when somebody is going off to take a pee even while averting your eyes to give them privacy and the OP had a perfect right to ask her to pick up her trash (in a diplomatic way) if he noticed it, so getting all macho 'protective' as Kirby suggested is ridiculous. She was being an ignorant slob and would probably keep doing it until somebody called her on it. If your significant other was so out of it, be glad somebody is helping her out.

I guess it is easy to put someone in the hospital if all you need to do is sit down.

It doesn't biodegrade, at least for a long, long time. And until that day comes, people have to see the yucky wad of TP every time they happen to look in that direction.

People just think this stuff will eventually go away not realizing that it may take days, weeks, months, years.

Citrus fruit rinds just get brown and dried. They take years to disintegrate, even in humid conditions. Banana peels get slimy and brown, and also take forever to disintegrate. Nut shells(peanuts, pistachios - years....

I have to clean up in a very popular picnic/swimming area nightly and I am just befuddled that people think it is fine to throw peach pits, nut shells, cigarette butts right there on the rocks where others will be sitting. It would be one thing(though still disgusting) if the place was littered up already, but if they took the time to actually think, they would notice that there is NO trash, even "natural" stuff, except for what they are discarding.

How would I have reacted to the girl in OP? I would probably not have noticed it when it happened(I mean...were you watching her pee, because if so...that's worse than her leaving the TP. Do you watch men when they go pee?) but if I saw TP on the ground and "had an idea" or even if I didn't have an idea who did it, I would exclaim loudly "What kind of pig leaves their toilet paper like that? They have enough planning to BRING the TP but not enough to realize they should bag and carry it out?"

Happie, have you never heard of a peeing contest, where boys (or drunk men) see who can pee the furthest?

Real wimmin don't need TP to pee.

It's not alpha bravado//it's litter and it's wrong

Reminds me of at the Main Cliff at Rumney once. A woman wanted to be quick so didn't go very far. She went about 30 feet and ducked behind a rotting but still standing tree trunk. As she was almost finished she leaned against the tree and it fell down with a crash, leaving her exposed and with the whole crag looking at her. At least she had a good sense of humor.

Um...ok. I was in no way even referring to littering. I was simply razzin' Bill for his statement about some dude witnessing some chick take a piss.

I do like how your post reads like a public service announcement though.

That must have been priceless. I have been caught with my pants down more than once.

I think he meant the macho response to somebody calling a woman out for the littering, John.
