First was soloed to access to top of the wall. This was the first route climbed on the wall.
Sgt Korthaus and Cpl James were providing security for our unit and drowned crossing the Saddam Canal attempting to set an LPOP on the other side roughly 100' wide. We were all shocked as we watched them swim across a relatively calm current, go under and not come up. They were the first warriors I knew that paid the ultimate price.
