I loved in the linked article about the 'sleeping dragons' etc. that the police officers experience breaking them up came from his "homeland security" experience.

If the sleeping dragon is a tool for non-violent protest then why is homeland security so highly trained in taking care of it?

We need to secure the nation ideologically.

J Thompson's rant about legal protesting is a joke.

Tell that to Rosa Parks and Gandhi. . . . extreme examples, sure, but I think they are valid. Injustice calls for civil disobedience.

The whole idea of a free speech zone is an afront to democracy and only one of many ways to manufacture consent and lay the drapery of democracy over our apathetic asses.

"I am sooooo inconvenienced by these people's ideas jarring me out of my soft bourgeois world .. . ooohhh, I just hate them! Why can't I just climb and not think about anything beyond the rock, braah."

In a zoo in California, a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth.

The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve.

After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. The veterinarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The only "orphans" that could be found quickly, were a litter of weaner pigs. The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around the mother tiger.
lol ~ I'm still missing something here with this -like- *Why* the turd-bombs...???

does throwing sh*t onto peoples clothing get their attention, is it to piss-them-off, or what's the message here...?

Kirra, are you trying to say that if I threw shit on you, I wouldn't have your attention?

nope ~ I'm asking because I'm not inside these protestors minds

yeah you'd probably get my attention first, then I'd be *p'd-off* - and as a result, I probably would not listen to anything you have to say and/or ignore you

I would think it would be better to get someones attention by tossing them something *nice* instead of a 'poo-bomb'. It might make the message that someone is trying to get across, received (or remembered) in a *more* positive way. Does that make sense..?

btw - can the DCC have a BBQ/meeting at your house in Golden -if we promise not to throw any poo (and bring lots o'beer)

Maybe but it'll be hard to find a time. My evenings are pretty much busy through the end of the month, after that I'm moving to downtown. If we want to have a rager at my studio (once I find one that is) I could show you my sweet d-town crack circuit.

The thing with protesters in general is that they are protesting to people who they know they can't change their minds. The goal though is to get the proper coverage in the media so others' will see the protest and be swayed by it.

Throwing poo probably isn't the best way to go about it.

Ha, now I'm picturing 'cute fuzzy puppy bombs' rather than poo-bombs...Though, I think I'd still be pretty angry if someone threw a puppy at me, hmmm...

If you ask the protesters, they have no intention of using any noxious substances during their protests; the ordinance was passed with the intention of making the protesters look bad. Theoretically, the protesters will lose credibility in the eyes of those people that do actual see them during the DNC.

Personally, I'm not sure if the policy-makers in Denver had that in mind or not, but it's probably going to be effective either way.

Marc,
Did you research that?
Or did you just read what the protesters said in a statement to the press?
The reason these things have been banned is that they have been used in the past by some of the same protest groups and similiar protest groups.
The Urine and feces bombs, generally, are used to provoke the police into taking action. The idea being that they are playing on emotion and hoping to envoke an inappropriate response.
Think about it, you are standing there doing your job and someone starts throwing human shit on you, what do you suppose your response is going to be? Anger?
So they occasionally get a violent response, video tape it, and sue the city.
Should a cop be held responsible for inappropriate and especially violent behavior? ABSOLUTELY!
Should the city outlaw things, that have no normal use, in an effort to protect them and the police from things like this? Yes.

I know the whole urine and Feces bomb thing sounds pretty damn funny. It is pretty damn funny!
But what you don't realise is that in the past protesters have literally shit into bags, carried them to demostrations, and then thrown them at the police and other protesters.
That is the reason the Ordinance was inacted.

I'm sure both Rosa Parks and Ghandi would approve.

Politics of hate. People are not trying to change someone's mind, they are trying to hurt them in one way or another.

Nobody needs to pass a new law about turds though. THrowing any object at any person is assault, and feces and it's bacterial content could easily be considered a weapon.

This is more about politics than behavior or actually controlling it.

When carabiners are outlawed, only outlaws will have carabiners!

Carabiners don't lock things up, people lock things up!

Let's start a grass roots (grass routes?) activist group. We'll call it "Layton's List." Or maybe "Clip-on.org."

Rather than banning bike locks, perhaps the police should just be given super glue or JB Weld, so they can squirt a bit of it into the locking mechanism. Just leave the protestors locked to the post.

You make it sound like this is common. But can you find a single link of this actually happening anywhere? Specifically, which protest groups do you think have used this "generally" as a tactic.

(I don't have much sympathy for these protesters, and no connection with them, but I'm curious to see if you can back up your assertion.)

No, I did not research it. I believe that protesters have indeed used noxious substances during their demonstrations before; I don't believe that it's a common tactic...at all. Banning the carrying of human waste, IMO, is silly because any law enforcement personnel is going to at least detain anyone found carry urine or feces. Like I said before, I know that it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things; I found the article interesting and thought others might as well, especially since some climbing gear was listed as some of the articles banned. I'm just throwing different perspectives out there; I don't necessarily sympathize with the protesters, mainly because I don't even know what they're protesting.

That is all... :)

standing on the summit

Not to pick any fights here, but does anyone else think it's odd that the Demonstrators are being kept so far away from the people who will attend the convention? Barricades, air conditioning units and generators all stand in the way of the protestors from being seen or heard. The part I think is funny, is that most of the Dems in power started out as protestors, and now they can't be bothered by the sights and sounds of a protest line?
