Description

This is a town of ~2500 which sits approximately 12 miles east of Grand Junction (on the western slope) along the I-70 corridor. This area may be best known for its excellent climate and soil for growing Colorado grapes for the Colorado wineries. Winters here are mild; however, summers can be enervating.

Among the climbing nearby, there is the somewhat outrageous climbing of the loosish, small towers emerging from the talus located just along the interstate.

There is a grocery store, a couple restaurants, and a couple breakfast bars.

This entry was created to match the submissions entered initially in the vicinity by one of its locals.

Getting There

Most folks will drive here via I-70. The town can be accessed via Exit 42 (or 44). Mt Garfield (~5500') is located WNW of Palisade, just north of the interstate. G.70 road which accesses the Mt. Garfield trailhead can be accessed via exit 42 and going south and then west.

Hospital

The closest hospital, St. Mary's, is in Grand Junction if the tower should crumble prematurely.

Question

So, is there any decent climbing higher up on Mt. Garfield?

Climb the west side of the tower, follow nail heads using tie-offs . One or two nails were a bit difficult to place as the leader, after about three placements, managed to hit his fingers full force with the hammer which for a while resulted in much pain and blood. However the situation soon made that inconvenience irrelevant . There are good anchors on the summit block. ...[more]
