A wonderful, wintry Cheyenne Canyon.

Description

North Cheyenne Canyon is a city of Colorado Springs park that is known as more of a rock climbing area than for ice. However, during the colder months of the year, there are a couple of waterfalls and drainages that can freeze up to offer some interesting bits of climbing. It is a great place to go if conditions are right and you don’t want to travel to some of the more far flung destinations to the North or West of town. Though there is not so much ice, it is a really good place to learn to climb, especially on Silver Cascade Falls, Saint Mary’s Falls, or Helen Hunt Falls. The more advanced climber will probably appreciate attempting the Phantom, when it can be found in good condition. The West face of the Pinnacle can also offer a good winter alpine climbing experience.

Getting There

Getting to North Cheyenne Canyon is a breeze. From Colorado Springs, exit Interstate 25 onto US Highway 24 west. Turn left or south on 21st street. Turn right or west on Cheyenne Blvd. Follow this until North Cheyenne Canyon Road splits back to the right. Most of the climbing is along this road. The Graduation Boulder is an easy to find landmark. Above it, across the creek is the Pinnacle. It is very easy to spot and has a wonderful 4 pitch up its north face called the Army Route.
