Route '268'

Description

This outstanding free standing pillar is a hidden jem of Colorado water ice. When it forms all the way to the ground #268 is like a little Rigid Designator, but without the crowds or interstate noise. Nestled in the west side of the beautiful canyon half way to the Morrow Point Dam on the Gunnison River (about a mile north of Newberry's Store in Cimarron Co). Named for the old #268 narrow gauge train engine that graces the approach to the ice, this climb presents a unique scenic experience not to be missed. Cimarron is located 20 miles east of Montrose and 40 miles west of Gunnison on US Highway 50. I highly suggest you stop in at Newberry's Store, gas up, snack up and chat up Jimmy. Cheers!

Protection

A small rack of screws should do. However if the flow doesn't touch down you will encounter a little spunky dry tooling to start.

Toprope Protection

A bolted anchor now allows for top ropes and raps.
