Major Maroon Boulder

Description 

This is a 25' boulder with numerous problems in the V0-V4 range. Most of the landings are exceptionally flat with a pine needle cushion, the only exception being the east face with a chopped tree, waiting to skewer, at the base. The boulder is well hidden amongst the trees, and sees equal amounts of sun and shade. Most of the top-outs are on small crimpers, but the rock is very hard. The harder problems have a safe landing, the highballs are easier, and the traverse 3/4 of the way around is excellent. The descent is via a jug on the west face. The initial moves down were sketchy the first go round.

Getting There 

As with any Flatiron approach there are several options. In my opinion the best is to take the Mesa trail from the South Draw parking area. Follow this north and finally west until it junctions with the Shadow Canyon trail. Continue west on the Shadow Canyon trail past an old building on the left and cross the streambed. The trail winds south and then west again. An old grass covered road can be seen on the right. Follow this until a bulbous, perhaps ten foot high boulder (Melon Boulder) can be seen on the right. From hear head straight downhill to the Major Maroon. If you reach a building on the right while on the Shadow Canyon trail, you have gone a couple hundred yards too far. This approach is approximately 2 miles.
