Description

The Second Flatiron rests between the much more imposing First and Third Flatirons. It is much neglected and only sees a small fraction of the traffic that its more stately neighbors get. However, it is the home of several classic flatiron scrambles of considerable length, and is well worth a visit. Be sure to sample Freeway, Dodge Block, and Free for All - Flatiron Classics by any measure.

Getting There

From the ranger cottage at Chautauqua Park follow the Chautauqua trail to the Flatirons Loop Trail. Follow this trail about 2/10 of a mile south to the First/Second Flatiron trail. This trail leads directly to the bottom of the north side of the second flatiron. The approach takes approximately half an hour.

Descent is to the north to the saddle between the First Flatiron and Sunset Rock. Pick up the the First/Second Flatiron trail here and descend to the east.

Freeway 5.0  CO : Flatirons : ... : Second Flatiron
This route was one of the first that I did in the Flatirons. It was the first that I did unroped. I've climbed it more than any other route in the Flatirons. It hardly ever sees traffic, you step off a trail onto the route, you step off the top of the route onto another trail, and the climbing is easy and sometimes unique. For all of these reasons, this route is one of my favorites in the Flatirons. Difficulty snobs will want to stay away.Th...[more]   Browse More Classics in CO
