I have decided to take a trip to Spain for a little bolt clipping in May.

Where should I go?

I've never been, but I always wanted to go to El Camino Del Ray, El Chorro, near Álora in Málaga, Spain

Here is a video of the access trail... Wow!

if you were going a bit later in the summer i would suggest mallorca. the water will still be a bit chilly. i would look into catalunya. lots to climb and only between an hour or two from barcelona. which is a great city with plenty of rest day activities.

I would second the Catalunya(or Catalonia in Castellano) region. I was there in April/May a few years ago. I really enjoyed Mont Sant (a limestone conglomerate area with tufas and cobbles where Hydrophobia is) and Siurana. Rodellar also has amazing tufa routes if you are climbing hard enough (I wasn't). There are MANY areas there like Mont Serrat and Riglos which are both multipitch conglomerate trad climbing. Look on desnivel.com. They have a section called "escuelas" that has a Rock and Road type listing of cliffs with number of routes, type of rock, size of the area, steepness, where to camp, etc. It has an English translation also.

There is a Rockfax topo available for the area, but I found that the local guidebooks were more accurate. I also felt better supporting locals instead of giving my money to some Brit who probably copied their work anyway.

Bring a down jacket! I imagined Spain to be sunny and warm, but it can get downright cold in the shade and during the Spring nights.

I was there this past june and loved it. I would highly recommend Catalunya/Barcelona for climbing. I am returning this december for more stuff that was in the sun and too hot. May should be great.

I liked siurana/montsant, Rodellar, Riglos, Montserrat, Vilanova de Meia, Terradets and others. I wrote an article here:

So Im heading to el chorro this coming jan, im kinda worried because ive heard that the camino del ray has been closed until it is repaired. Is this true? If so how much does that limit the climbing?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
