I'm planning to visit Cody next month, and haven't climbed in the south fork since 2007, when I stayed at Bison Willy's hostel (which has since shut down).

I plan to ask the all-knowing Google of course, but am curious to know if anyone has recommendations on fairly inexpensive motels in town ?

for cody I have used the Bear hotel at the end of town across from the road that leads to south fork. You can work a weekly deal with the guy.

There's a new cabin for ice climbers available on the south fork: you'll need to contact Don Foote for info and to reserve it:
Here's some info-
"Foote’s Mountaineering will be coordinating reservation for the “NEW southforkice climbers cabin” located at the Flying-H Ranch beginning December 01, 2012.

This is a locked and secure private ranch on the Hunter Creek road (dead end) and south side of the valley. A cabin with rooms with a view out your front door to the classic climbs of hunter creek falls, ice fest, festoring ice, horse tail, shank stew and the sheep eater creek drainage. An hour walk down to duck soup, mean green and high on boulder just to name a few.

Staying with Flying-H will save 45 miles, 1 hour drive early mornings and the same 45 miles and an hour long drive back to town each evening.

We offer what no hotel/motel in town provides and when you stay with us you get full kitchen accommodations, nice living room with walk out porch, a mud room with full laundry for wet n dirty gear. Other options of valley shuttles and horse rentals are available for minimal costs.

Side A:
The Master suite sleeps 2 in a queen bed with a nice size room and full size bathroom. $69.95 nightly

Side B:
A large room that can sleep 5 with a full bed, twin bed set of bunk beds, spare bed and full size bathroom. $99.95 nightly

American Alpine Club (AAC) members receive 10% discount. ALL reservations are taken care of in town only! You need to pay via CC#, security deposit, sign waiver, receive your key and drive up to meet the ranch manager at the gate to get in.

More information will soon be available; the flying-H looks forward to seeing you soon for the 2012-2013 ice climbing season."

Interesting. The Flying H ... wow. That's cool. And Foote Mountaineering stirring to life as well.
Hi, Rob, it's good to see you back; you seem to just keep getting better. Big Bear is friendly to climbers and the price is right. If you decide to stay at the Flying H, though, please let us know how it goes. Have a great trip!

I know others who have liked the Bear (Big Bear? Black Bear?) motel, but haven't used it myself. "Our Place" right across the road is great for breakfast (they only take cash BTW) or try the Beta Coffeehouse on the side street just past the Irma (12th and Sheridan) for good coffee and breakfast burritos/sandwiches.

Might also get in contact with Jackson Hole Mtn Guides; rumor last year had it they were trying to work out accommodations in the Valley too.

Our party of three stayed at the Flying H four nights and had a great time. The location makes getting to High on Boulder, Mean Green, etc. a little easier (no need to cross the river).

We also stayed at the Skyline Motor Inn in town a few nights -- they have a nice suite with kitchen, washer/dryer, etc for decent rates in the winter, not far from the airport and within walking distance of groceries.

Thanks again !
