Access Issue: Certain Peaks: Access limited from May to October every year Details

Some of the peaks in this area are restricted (not all). See the Inyo National Forest's Mount Whitney Zone regulations webpage fs.usda.gov/detail/inyo/pas… for current information. Access is usually limited from May to October of every year from the highest elevations of most of the Lone Pine Creek watershed.

Description

This peak lies about 3 miles south of Mt. Langley, and could claim to be the most southernly High Sierra peak (it's the first peak listed in Secor's guide). There are no classic rock climbs of note. The easiest way probably being along its north ridge from New Army Pass.

The is a colossal view north and west from its summit.

Getting There

The peak can be accessed from the lower/southerly of the Cottonwood Lakes, and from west and southeast of the peak.

The trailhead starts at Horseshoe Meadows, there's a huge and popular parking area here, the trail is very easy but a bit long, heading up a flat valley for a long way before going up hill to the lakes. It is a very scenic area.

To reach Horseshoe Meadows take the Whitney Portal Road west out of Lone Pine, but turn left when you see the sign to Horseshoe Meadows, a very spectacular drive is made up the slope of the mountain and over the main crest into some very special forested scenery.

This peak would be a great ski-mountaineering objective in early season after the road is opened.
