BETA PHOTO: Starting the approach to Chip Tower(smaller tower ...

Description

Chip Tower and it's neighbor Dale are the first two towers along the White Rim road if approaching from the Shafer Trail. Chip is the lower tower that is slightly closer to the road.

Getting There

Park at a prominent wash on the side of the tower closest to the Shafer Trail - about 5 miles from the Shafer Trail/White Rim junction. Hike up the wash and then up the first bench of the mesa. You should find an old mining road that makes the approach very casual. Follow it as it switchbacks to the mine, and then scramble up and right to get to the towers. With good route finding, it is easy 3rd class. The approach takes about 40 minutes.

The beginning is a bit rotten so test carefully. The traverse is not obvious - I went as high as possible before the crack thinned down too much for clean gear a...[more]   Browse More Classics in UT
