A fairly new addition to the Ruth Lake area, the chief wall offers a few moderate climbs on both gear and bolts. While the good medicine wall is bustling with folks, one can often find solace here.

Getting There

Head up the trail towards the good medicine wall and veer left (east) towards the next set of cliffs facing towards the north west.

General George Custer

General George Custer 5.10 6b 20 VII- E2 5b  UT : Uinta Mountains : ... : Chief Wall
Not the best route in the world, but not the worst either. Better than its been described, General George Custer is an odd line to say the least. Lacking the continuity of its neighbors, this climb's awkward and unsteady feel will begin to grow on you after the third bolt. Teeter your way slowly up the route using pinches, edges, crimps, and chips. Maintaining balance and opposition will be a must on this fragile journey. ...[more]   Browse More Classics in UT

There are definitely many routes in the Chief Wall area. Much more than are currently on Mountain Project, and harder ones, too! Not sure their ratings or names or anything, but easily an afternoon's worth of concentrated routes with good rock from 5.8 to 5.11 or so.

Also, if you happen to be backpacking in the area, I'd recommend going beyond Ruth Lake to Hayden, Jewel, or Lofty Lake(s) (not much further at all along the trail) for a more solitary and gorgeous experience.

Tons of routes here, I've heard it called the "Family Wall" as well. I may have left a pair of La Sportiva shoes there over Labor Day weekend. I don't know exactly the size, but they're small, like a men's 6-7. They're lace ups and are pretty aggressively curved. I don't know the exact model, I bought them used from IME in New Hampshire
