I just moved to Arkansas and saw that there's a crag, Chenal Mountain, 10 minutes from my office. I've also seen that it was closed around 2012. Does anyone know what the current status is? Thanks!

Shinall (yeah it's actually spelled different) is and probably will forever be 'closed to the public.' It's actually the crag that the founders of the Arkansas Climbers Coalition started the coalition to obtain, which they never did. It's owned by whoever owns the towers on top, which I believe is a local TV channel. anyway, the climbing there isn't spectacular. 30 ft routes, rock is not your typical SE sandstone. somewhere in between sandstone and quartzite. routes are hard to read and not always bolted to well with groundfall potential in every fall.

in short, you can go there, climb there, and have a good day... if you don't get caught. I personally don't think the climbing is worth the trespassing fine (which people have gotten plenty of going there). But I have also never gotten caught. Normally I would say 'Don't visit somewhere with sensitive access because there is always a chance it could open in the future.' but this crag isn't opening any time soon. I would recommend just driving the hour to Dardanelle or do the easy trad on pinnacle. oh, and since you just moved here, join the Arkansas Climber's facebook page if you haven't already.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
