Description Suggest change

Cerro Lopez is another great climbing spot in Bariloche with sport cragging and bigger trad lines (up to 400 meters). The rock is granite and most of the walls are North facing (sun most of the day). It's right on the side of the lake so you get great views. Although it's lower than Frey you can still expect to experience all of the elements while climbing the bigger routes, so dress accordingly.

Most, if not all of the long routes are mixed protection. The cracks don't tend to be continuous like in Frey, they are more scattered, pocketed, and even horizontal at times. Look closely for the next bolt and bring enough gear for anything.

There are 2 main big walls that are obvious and some sport cragging areas below each wall.

Muro del Hotel: Get to the hotel, walk around the left side of the lake looking for the Brazo Tristeza sign. Walk about 200m to a wooden fence / gate then go straight up hill to a short wall, walk left. Find a place to scramble up to get to the base. About 30 minutes for the approach from the hotel if you don't get lost bushwhacking and don't rope up for the scramble.

Muro del Cementerio: Per the book, routes to 280 meters. Approach is 50 minutes. Left of the Muro del Hotel & Segundo Piso. The approach trails starts on the road about halfway between the hotel and the previous bus stop.

To get here, take the #10 bus to Bahia Lopez. Only some of the #10 buses go all the way to Bahia Lopez. The others stop at Colonia Suiza. If that's the bus you're on, you can have the bus driver drop you at the intersection and walk the road to the hotel in 20 minutes. Currently buses run from about 6am to 9pm.

Bariloche Vertical - Guia de Escaladas en Patagonia Norte (ISBN 978-987-27547-0-9) is a great book and has all of the information you would want for this place (and much more around Bariloche). You can buy it at Club Andino, La Luna Muro or JG Sports.

Getting There Suggest change

Take the #10 bus out to the Hotel at Bahia Lopez. Only 4 of the #10 buses per day go to the end. The other buses only go as far as Colonia Suiza but it's not a big deal as that ads about a 20 minute walk along a paved road.
