When looking at gear do you look to see if it has UIAA/CE certification? If so, which one? and why? What is the difference between them? Being a safety-minded climber I like to "stack the odds" in my favor. My camera has a CE rating so that rating must encompass more products than just climbing paraphernalia. The UIAA, from what I understand has pioneered the standard at which climbing gear is tested. They seem resolute to test only mountaineering/climbing equipment. Please enlighten me.
CE certification (technically it is approval) is mandatory for a large range of products and services for sale in the European community. It is there to provide a common set of standards for manufacturers independent of the country of origin (simply put to stop cheap shit undecutting expensive European manufacture). To gain CE approval the product must pass the relevant European standard which is the EN number or if there is no standard the manufacturer can write his own. The UIAA standards are generally the basis for the relevant EN for climbing equipment and the differences are minor. The UIAA Safety Label (which is what it is called as they are not an accredited standards authority) is volountary.
