Description
The Castillo de Santa Catalina is a very popular climbing area due to its proximity to the city (directly overlooking it) and has two sections; the north face and the south face. The south face of the castle is very warm and sunny and therefore makes for a great winter/cold weather crag. The north face is known for its shade and summer climbing conditions. The majority of routes within Castillo de Santa Catalina are sport routes although there is some traditional and aid climbing to be had on the north face.
Getting There
Approach the crag from the road Carretera de Circunvalación. From here you can take one of two options; (1) drive up towards the Parador de Turismo and park across from the picnic area towards the top of the hill and follow the trail behind the picnic area to the crag (easiest and least amount of walking) or (2) from the Carretera de Circunvalación follow the path way that begins at the stairs and borders the entire south face of the castle. to reach the north face follow the path way around the back of the castle that passes by the north face. There is also a city bus (bus #9) that stops at the bottom of the crag; from there you can see the trail that you need to follow in order to reach the south face.
