Hey all, heading to Taos to ski a few days...need it to be done on the cheap. Does any one know of a good camping area (BLM/State park) that is close to the mountain that won't be closed/totally snowed in this time of year? A little drive is OK, would love it to be less than a half hour.

'preciate it!

I've car-biv'd in the parking lot at Taos a few times. It's cold but quiet. Tico

Me on the summit of Little Bear Peak after soloing...
It's been a long time since I camped out there, but as I remember, there's a ton of BLM and Nation Forest land around that has free camping. There are a bunch of 4WD roads in the Carson NF. If you're cool with snowshoeing and digging out a parking spot, you can camp off the road that goes up to the ski area. I would call Taos Mountain Outfitters and Mud'n'Flood and ask them about where to go.

Also, if you don't feel like camping, my favorite hostel in the world is there: snowmansion.com/Lodging.html you can camp in the field behind the hostel for $18 per night, which includes the use of the kitchen and common areas.

+1 for this camping area, it was cheap and the covered table area was nice in case of rain. A few crags within 15min too.

Slick Rock put in
Pilar is great and all but it's a long way from the mountain! Then throw in the normal Taos traffic jam and boy Pilar is going to feel even further away. Allen Hill
