I'm wondering if anyone has any knowledge on winter camping in Rumney. I'm going up this weekend with a small group and we usually stay at Baker River Campground but they're already closed for the Winter. Any ideas welcome, thanks

D Acres (about 10 minutes away) is a great organic farm and homestead that rents beds. Rent ends up being in the 10-30 per person per night range depending on the digs you get. For an extra charge they will feed you delicious food straight from the farm.

Oh yeah I should have immediately mentioned the food, which is delicious and grown by them!
you can camp in their camping area, or in any of the makeshift cabins they have around (some don't have windows/doors, some have loft beds, some are actually their yoga room!).
Great place and really nice people.

what's up Dan! Ur gonna have a sweet weekend up there... Dacres is nice but it's more like 15-20min. Try mountain pines or rattlesnake across from parking lot... I have their tel # so you can call if you want it I'll pm it to ya. You can also stay at the trailhead further down buffalo rd if you hike in 250 ft or whatever the reg is...

Last year Mountain Pines was open year-round, charged us $5 per person per night, but, the water was off and bathrooms were closed, so it was just a place the put up a tent and sleep. I assume they'll do the same thing this year.

Rattlesnake, across the street from the parking area, has closed up for the winter.

Also, while I definitely support backcountry camping in the WMNF, please be advised that the Rattlesnake Mountain Trailhead is a posted forest protection area, so the setback is 1/4 mile from the trailhead. If you're in to hiking to a backcountry site, PM me and I'll tell you where a couple really good, legal sites are located.

If you would rather have facilities, try this list: climbrumney.com/rumney-info…

Just quietly pull into Pete's yard late at night and set up. You can bath in the river and piss in the bushes off to the side, and if you get hungry he has some fat chickens..build a fire! :)

Ruining the uber secret local beta.

Wanted to add - there's a barn nearby, just pry some siding from it if you need kindling. And there's lots of bark on them trees, and it will grow back (after the tree dies and another grows in its place next century) if you peel it all away... ;-)

I will be seriously upset if my barn is missing siding. ;)

Seriously, though, it *is* getting a little chilly at night (17 degrees last night). If it were me, I'd look for cheap indoor lodging. It sucks to wake up with frost on the ceiling of your tent when you're sport climbing.

I've already accepted the fact that we are going to freeze. Oh well, I'll just let this be my bad idea of November! :)Thanks for all the responses guys!

It's not fun unless you're wearing a puffy inside your sleeping bag. ...right?

it's not horrible. I backpack too so my camping gear is pretty nice.

having a hat on and wearing socks helps a lot. understand that you need to go find a sunny wall early on or it will be pretty rough to climb.

Yeah but I'm a weenie. I like my toes toasty and my wife happy (she hates cold tents)!
