This is one of the closest crags to Reno and features high-quality routes on high-quality granite. There is a mix of bolted routes and crack climbs and also some top-roping possibilities. Because of its proximity to Reno, you will not likely be alone.
The rock is on the south side of Interstate 80 and faces N/NW, providing late day sun.
Getting There
From Reno, drive I-80 west, exit at Farad, then get back on the 80 and go back east for 2.5 miles to a large parking area off the interstate. Walk past the gate from the west side of this parking area, then turn left onto a trail through the shrubs. Take this across a road, passing a small rock outcrop on your left, and aiming for a saddle between this outcrop and another on the right. There will be a big pine tree in between these rock outcrops. Continue down to the railroad tracks, cross the tracks and head for the suspension bridge to cross the river. After crossing the bridge, stay left of the levee for a couple hundred more yards until you can easily cross the levee and hike straight up to the rock. The approach takes about 15 minutes.
Thanks to Mike Carville as we were able to find and enjoy this area using his guide "Rock Climbing Lake Tahoe".
