Is there anyone who still logs on who knows about the bouldering around the Glorieta Mesa in New Mexico aside from Apache Canyon and Cactus Heaven? I've got a break coming up and would love to go check out some of the farther areas, but fear getting lost on the directions I currently have. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Yes... but the roads will be churned up with mud right now. FYI the grotto is on private land, and shouldn't be climbed at without landowners permission.

Thank you for that, that's the spot I was most hoping to find, haha. I was unaware it was on private land, I'll be sure to steer clear of it unless the angst gets too much and I go get permission. Would you happen to know of any of the other spots worth checking out in the area?

You can try checking out the Outer Limits (GPS N 35 30.566 W 105 47.864) and The Powerline Boulders (GPS N 35 30.288 W 105 47.567). I dont think they are very good, but they would be new to you. Also, good luck negotiating the muddy roads.

Thanks Owen :) I've got a couple weeks before I head out there, and no rain or snow is expected right now, so hopefully it'll dry up a bit. And yeah, I just enjoy climbing new places and especially sandstone. If roads don't work with me, I'm going to have to head up to La Madera if time allows to check out some of those gorgeous lines you have up there.

New is always fun, as is exploring. There is another lone boulder out there, the casa de la vaca, which jefferson has several videos of (below), but I don't know exactly where it is. Yeah hopefully the roads dry out!

La Madera... now you are talking!

Yeah, I've seen his videos quite often, and they're one of the things that have given me the desire to go explore out there. So hopefully all is well on the travel front, I just want to get out and boulder some new places!

Your blog has definitely inspired me to want to go check out what ya'll have found up there, as well as the Ortega/Posos areas. If my car gets fixed soon, I'll definitely be going to check that stuff out, looks incredible!

Corey, the Ortegas area (our name for the whole Ortega/Nosos AKA La Madera/Vallecitos/Posos/Cerro Azul outcrops) is worth getting the car fixed for alone. PM me for approach beta whenever you want.

Eric, yup it will be going in the book, and as such Im not super keen to give away all the info publicly beforehand (as it would undermine my work for the book of course). However, its not my decision, if the people who discovered these areas feel they are ready to be put up on mountainproject then so be it. However I do think that MP sucks for bouldering areas, especially backcountry ones that are hard to navigate.

I know the crew who are developing Ortega West are super psyched to get people out there, but at the same time they feel it needs a bit longer for trails to be developed to minimize impact. So maybe there'll be an internet guide to this zone this summer (Ortega west is seriously amazing btw).

Nosos! Yes. Near the town of La Madera.

Absolutely. Tom, William and co have contributed more to NM bouldering than anyone has or probably ever will, which has been a total revolution as far as I can tell. Im sure glad they have put in all the work they have. Areas being "off the internet" is not in any way the same as being secret.

I am sorry for not writing Nosos, my bad Tom, Corey threw me off! La Madera is just the los alamos name for Nosos.

And now I know, I'm just learning about most of these, so forgive me if I'm off a bit when talking about places, haha. I haven't met any of these guys doing all of the developing, but I am very thankful for it, and would love to climb with any of ya'll, given the opportunity. Either way, thanks for correcting me and also for helping me out with info on areas I've become curious about.
