I am looking for info about bouldering @ groton state park,

I went on a bouldering trip to the groton area once to Kettle Pond (IIRC), there was so much china white granite I had to constantly remind myself it wasn't a dream. I know Pete Kamitses has developed a bunch in that area BITD.

I've heard there is some high quality stuff around there but I've never found any of it myself. Only been in the area once and my boulder senses were tingling, I knew there had to be something...

Pete and others have put up a bunch of routes at Marshfield which is in Groton State Forest. I'm sure there are boulder problems there as well. Looking on google earth you can see significant boulders around Kettle Pond and at the base of Marshfield Ledge.

Go to kettle... u will not be disappointed. I also recall seeing a large overhanging wall off in the distance when we were there.

As Morgan says, there is a lot in that area. Just be prepared for the goods to be spread far apart. A boulder here, a boulder or two there. Best to go when the leaves are down for your first explorations.

So I went and did some walking around Kettle Pond with a friend. I can tell you guys where the boulders are NOT and where they could be. We got there late and had limited daylight but managed to hike around the front half of Kettle Pond. I'll call the front the side with the parking lot on it. We did the trail along the right side (when looking at the pond from the lot) and to the right of that trail is a hill that goes up. This hill has a ton of boulders littered across it but we didn't find anything climbable. Maybe 1 or 2 1 move wonder problems that weren't worth the cleaning effort. We only walked this way about 1/3 of the length of the pond then went back to the other side with the campgrounds where The Gem boulder is supposed to be. We walked all around the campgrounds but couldn't find any climbable boulders.

We basically covered the front 1/3 to 1/2 of the pond on both sides and didn't find much.

My guesses as to the location of the boulders would be the BACK side of the pond on either side, and possible further up the hill that was littered with small boulders or on the other side of the hill. It looked like there was more boulders up the hill but we didn't have time to check it out. It also looked like there was a lot more rock in and around the pond towards the back side.

I recall the best boulders being china white and tall, like all highballs, with mostly arete climbs and blank faces with a few crimpers/flakes here and there and lots of them. They were along a hillside rising to our left as we walked out. They weren't near the pond and we didn't take any trails. There was a V10 sloper problem pete did right along a road/trail.

There are also scattered boulders along the rail trail.

China White and highballs used to be my thing back in the band days but I quit that shit years ago.

If all the China White isn't totally screwing with my memory, Mobius, V8(FA-Colin Rickert) is right off the rail trail,

and there are a few more within 5-10 minutes of either side of it. But it's ~ten years since I've been, so memory is fuzzy.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
