Billy Rothstein on the left and Layne Potter after the First Ascent of Napes Needle ,San Rafael Swell .Utah. 6th Sept 2006 Billy Rothstein passed on this week at Park City Utah. Billy accompany me on such first ascents as the 1600' Day of Atonement (2003), Marble Slab in the San Rafael Swell Eastern Reef and Napes Needle (2006) in the Northern part of the Swell. Our first new route together was in 1999 Moab Rim Tower with our long time mutual friend Jimmy Dunn. Found memories of a great character ...we had fun .

I didn't want to believe this, much like many of these types of posts. Billy was one of my great friends and "a great character" is a fantastic way to describe him. I believe he climbed ancient art 47 times. He gave me some of the best advice ever"if you get to the top of a pitch and have gear left over, you took too much gear." He was a great climbing mentor for me.

Take time and live with those whom you love with purpose.
