Is Big Chief climbable now, or is there still too much snow up there?
Hey Cliff,
Big Chief is usually climbable and probably is right now. However the bigger deal is getting there because the road in along the top is often closed off by the forest service at the beginning of the last big hill before the parking area. Now, you can still park and hike in (or hike in from the bottom if you know how), but you just have to want it more. My guess is that the road is still closed given that it is early March.
Sorry that I don't have any more information....perhaps someone else will post.
It just snowed a few inches this week. Everything is wet right now. Probably climbable again by next weekend, as long as another storm doesn't roll in.
As J Albers said, the 06 road is still closed, so you'll have to hike it. Please be respectful of the people who live along the river if you hike from 89, and avoid their yards, etc.

Thanks guys!
Drove up to Truckee on Sunday April 21, but the entire forest service road is still closed, even the paved section. A friendly local we met said it will probably open around early to mid May.
A mountain bike would have no problem getting in until the car gate opens.
