DescriptionVolcanic desert plug, basalt & welded tuff. Getting ThereBarber Peak is the first prominent volcanic plug on the left 10-12 miles south of Shiprock on US 491. A short dirt road takes off east just before you reach the peak & leads virtually to the toe of the feature. Begin on the east side with a scramble of several hundred feet up the prominent gully, mostly 3rd class with a move or two of 5th. The second may appreciate a rope although the leader will find little protection. The gully ends atop the broad shoulder directly south of the summit block.
