Description

The Ayo Rock Formations is the giant monolithic boulder field in the middle of the island. The diorite boulders have been subjected to severe weathering over the millennia, resulting in fantastically alien features for climbing. The rock is mostly bomber, but is crumbly and exfoliating in some parts. It is hot year round, but you can easily chase shade or better yet just hit the beach during the hottest part of the day.

The first recorded settlers of the island, The Arawak People, would use these rocks to scout out incoming weather patterns. They left beautiful petroglyphs behind, so don't be a jerk and climb anywhere near them. In addition to rock art, watch out for snakes and bees.

Despite being a popular tourist destination, admission is free and chances of seeing other climbers here are near zero.

Getting There

From Oranjestad take 6 heading northeast towards the Ayo area. The Ayo Rock Formations will soon come into view if they are not already. When they are immediately on your right, take the first right and the parking area will be on your right.

It's a very popular destination and anyone can give you directions if you need them. The approach is ten seconds to ten minutes depending on which boulder you want to get to.
