Description

This area includes the east-facing formations found in Devils Canyon proper, including the main Glitter Box area as well as the Totem Pole and surrounding routes.

Getting There

Driving directions/parking: Follow driving directions from main Lower Devil's Canyon page. With high clearance 4wd you can park at the end of the road (the ant hill). This is also a popular primitive camping spot, as evidenced by the increasing number of fire pits. Without high clearance 4wd, park off the road as far as you are comfortable driving and hike the rest of the way in. Parts of the last segment of the road between the Hackberry parking pullout (just past the windmill) and the end of the road is the roughest of the entire drive in.

Approach: To get to routes - proceed east from end of road/parking area and pass through an opening in a barbed wire fence. A climber trail will branch to the north (left) for the Glitter Box area, continue on a bit then branch to the south (right) for the Totem Pole and other routes nearby.

A tall, slender tower in a scenic location with good climbing and a tiny summit make for a great route. Start low on the NE side and climb up and right, slowly circling around to the West side to a belay. Belay here to avoid rope drag or, with a long rope, continue up to the top....[more]   Browse More Classics in AZ
