Are aiders really necessary for the RNWF of HD?

If my partner and I can free 11- can we just pull on gear and french free the aid portions? Or is this a horribly stupid idea?

I haven't been on that specific route, but I have been in similar terrain. Any time I think there's a chance I might need to aid a section, I'll at least bring a mini aider. I don't even notice it in my pocket and it's super handy for short aid sections; making it faster, easier, and safer.

No, aiders are not needed, especially if you can legit free 11- up there. Stand in a single or tied double length sling on the aid portions. My partner didn't use aiders at all, although I brought them, mostly for the 2nd to jug (2nd didn't free).

What's a "mini aider"?

I assume he means something like these
metoliusclimbing.com/pocket…

or

trango.com/slings_webbing/A…

or

backcountry.com/black-diamo…

Like I said, I thought a pair of double length slings tied in the middle (effectively making a two step aider)worked pretty well for stuff like this.

It's just a smaller aider made from thin (possibly Dyneema) webbing. Mine fits in a shirt pocket. It's not necessary, but way easier than messing with slings.

just did it and I brought 2 wall aiders. they were just hangen on my harness most of the time but I foung them very useful for the zig zags and a couple bolt ladders. they were great for the leader hust putting them on a piton on a hard section and using it as foot holds then leaving it for the folower to get. we had the follower free climb for the most part which was much better so the rope was organized already and it was more fun and less awkwerd!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
