| I have the opportunity to buy a new Arc'Teryx Atom LT in either jacket or hoody form for a good deal - any recommendations on hoody versus non?
As a heads up, I have a Paty gift cert with some money left so was also considering picking up a Nanopuff hoody too, due to its greater packability (I think?).
I am leaning toward the jacket, because I feel like I'll often pair the Atom with my shell, and rocking double hoods seems weird especially since I have a beanie for the harsh days. But any input on your systems or approaches would be swell! |

| Get the hoodie it's a no brainer. I have the Atom SV if you have the option go SV it's defiantly worth the extra coin. Top it off with a shell and it's a great mountaineering setup. I use the Beta AR in spring and Alpha SV in winter. Also the nano isn't a bad idea for pack-ability. I use the Western Mountianeering Flash XR when I need to go light. The Atom won't pack down very small. |

On the coldthistle blog I was reading how Dane sometimes uses two 60g synth jackets to layer. Anyone possibly have experience with wearing a med. Atom LT and layering a Nanopuff jacket or hoody in med. either on top of or below it?
I actually kind of fit between a sm. and a med - med shoulders are good, but too big around waist. Was thinking of potentially also buying the med. and tailoring the waist, to be trimmer. |

| Hoody all the way. I like the nano for ice/rock belays and for rock climbing but I get too hot in it ice climbing. It does not breath well at all.
| Nano jacket (no hood) on left and Atom LT w/ Hood on right. Both sacks have room for cell phone, bars etc with the purple sack having more space than nano pocket.

Wow actually they pack down pretty similarly huh. Not sure why I thought the Atom didn't pack down as good... Does it come with a stuff sack?
Ok, on my way to buy me an Atom LT Hoody goodness. The SV looks nice too, but it's not on sale, and also I think I will need the breathability of those stretch panels.

I use the same system that Dane is referring to and a M nanopuff pull over fits very nice over a M Atom LT (Patagonia cuts are generally pretty boxy and generous). Very versatile for winter or shoulder season climbing. If it's really cold out or if I foresee a bivy in winter, a M Atom SV fits over either or both of the pieces well too.
Can't go wrong with the Atom LT though. Only piece of kit I've paid full price for and I think it was worth every penny |

Well, I placed the order for the Med. hoody, all excited - then got an email today saying they're actually out of stock, and they refunded my money. Poor website management =(
They have the non-hoody available, one left in my size, but, now not sure if I want a non-hoody... Or, should I buy, and later look for another deal for the hoody too? Hm. |

Who the fuck is Shirley? Save the extra $95, buy either the Patagonia R1 Hoody on sale or NWAlpine Spider. I wear those two pieces on just about every climb during the winter. |

And, so I've actually contributed something here, pretty much all of my mid and outer layers have hoods, and I feel great about layering hoods. I almost never carry a hat. |

HM. Darn. The LT already shipped. Maybe I can find someone local who will buy it. The R1 is another piece I've been feeling the need for. The pullover hoody right? (i.e. they don't make a zip hoody). I was thinking of either that or a merino hoody baselayer (don't think Paty makes one; was thinking of the Icebreaker Eclipse, 260 weight). How much warmth does a merino hoody provide? |

Merino hoodies at such a heavy weight are shite. Heavy and don't ever dry. Gridded fleece is where it's at.
My Atom LT comes with me on almost every trip. I always have a use for it. Warmish, fairly breathable, dries fast, packs small. |

Good to know! Thanks for the info. I have a thin, gridded fleece mid - it's definitely superb. Unfortunatel, no hood on that one either. But guess I had the right material.
How about you? Is your Atom a hood or non? |
