Hey all,

I'm doing a little long term job planning and was interested in hearing from anyone currently or formally employed as a LEO for the Forest Service.

A little background on myself, I have a bachelors degree in history and I am currently in the U.S Army, which by the way was a huge mistake. I want to complete my enlistment and get the hell out. From the research I have done it seems like a meet the basic qualifications.

What I would like to know is this, can I do anything to make myself a more competitive candidate? Would pursuing a degree in a specific field be beneficial or does any bach. degree suffice? Also, if I was hired where could I expect to be working? Most importantly, what is the day to day routine like working in this field? Is it fulfilling, do you make a comfortable living, and do you have an opportunity to enjoy a social life etc.?

Keep in mind that the only information that I have on this job is what I have read on Gov. websites. Some knowledge "straight from the horse’s mouth" would be great. Any advice, tips, or stories are appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

glassdoor employer reviews

You might find something there--I've found info on many companies and organizations that I've considered working for.

Good luck out there! You'll have veteran's preference, which I think means you get a few points added to your application.

Cheers,
Kirby

Are you Chicken, or fishy?

I worked as an assistant to an LEO for a summer, that was only 1 or 2 days a week. Otherwise my primary job was to clean toilets, best job anyone could ever hope for, seriously!

My suggestion is to first apply for every seasonal job you can (this summer is going to be a huge bitch due to our incompetent congress!!!). It is very rare for the FS to hire someone they haven't had working for them. If you can use your GI bill for Law Enforecement training than that would be a good thing to get. The LEO I worked with loved his job, but he had a huge chip on his shoulder. I could never care about half the shit he was supposed to, but that's why some people are suited for certain jobs. If you hate the Army, then I'm not really sure you would be the type to care about the stupid shit an LEO is supposed to care about.

If you are having a hard time finding an FS job then keep a watch on this website: www.inyocounty.us/county_jobs/jobs.htm

Best place to live in the country and they are always looking for sheriffs, although you may not want to tell them you're a climber, tell them you love hunting and fishing.

Hey,

Thanks for these links guys. I will def. put them to good use while looking for a job. I had heard that the FS likes to hire people from the seasonal employee pool too. Thanks again.
