Alternative to the Red during Rocktoberfest
|
We are two Brit climbers who'll be taking in Red River Gorge as part of a two-month road trip. We'll probably be in the Red during October, but thought we'd clear out during Rocktoberfest as it sounds pretty crowded. Any suggestions for an alternative sport or trad destination upto 2-3 hours away preferably with camping nearby? |

Ummmm... |

We already have the New on our list - the idea was to spend a week or two at the New first then move on to the Red. We were looking for somewhere a bit closer to the Red just for a couple of days. |

Obed is prolly a 3 hr drive from RRG. |

Check out Chattanooga, Tennessee? If your really into sport it might not work too well but it's incredible East side climbing if you'r into trad. |

If you're worried about the crags being crowded, there are tons of places you could climb where it wouldn't be busy at all (especially if you climb trad). |

Obed should be good during october. Hit me up on here as it is my local crag and we can meet up and do some climbs. |

I prefer trad so my top 3 choices if I were starting from the RRG would be (from closest to furthest) The New River Gorge (~4 hrs), Tennessee Wall (~4.5 hrs) and Seneca Rocks (~6 hrs). Of the 3 I would go for the long haul and hit Seneca. |

You can't go wrong with any of the suggestions so far (obed, Twall, NRG). Also check out some of the places in North Carolina. There also about 3-5hrs away along with all the other suggestions. Some good NC routes can be found at Rumbling Bald and Linville Gorge. If you don't mind a long approach you could still hit some of the more off the beaten path areas in the RRG and they will be fairly empty. |
