Getting There

Up high and beyond the Clamshell. This is a pretty good hike that takes the ambitious climber up and out to the upper meadow above and west of East Hellgate. Probably still quite undeveloped, the prolific and proficient Bill Hunt has been mostly responsible for the existing route activity in this hardman area.

Juggy climbing, long blind reaches, and fun mantels up two big overhangs. The crux involves a reachy move to a well-hidden jug pocket above the second overhang. Bad rock on the first 20 feet but it gets much better above that. Great views on top....[more]   Browse More Classics in UT

Directions: There are different ways to get to the wall but a faint trail does exist. From the Clamshell/East Hellgate, the trail continues up the right side of a steep meadow and over a discontinuous band of rock, putting you at the base of a bigger meadow. Altaworld is in plain sight. Rather than make a beeline for the cliff, follow the trail to the right. It makes one big switchback: right along the base of the meadow, and then back left on a diagonal through the meadow and to a point where you can cross a steep rocky drainage. After that, the trail zig zags straight up to the cliff. It is about 15 minutes from the car to the Clamshell, and another 15 from Clamshell to Altaworld.
