Just looking at the pictures you posted (I haven't seen the movie) it appears that if he had caught the fall he may have ended up being pulled into the rock face or done a face plant?

Nevertheless, he lets go of the brake (hands completely off rope) in the last photo. The way the rope is wrapped through the carabiner I'm sure there was not much he could do to arrest a fall. Partner needs SAR?

I'm not sure what is going on in the pictures... does not look safe.
