BETA PHOTO: Overview of routes on 1st Meat

Description

This is the least popular of the meat walls, with a very faint and steep approach trail.

Getting There

Drive down the dirt road towards original and second meat walls, but stick right until you reach a parking area with lots of broken glass and old nails. Park here, and walk up an old mining road until you can cut left up a wash (before the big rock in the road). Follow a poorly marked trail to the ridge, then head strait up towards the wall.

Climb a thin hands splitter that narrows to tips and make a leftwards crack switch to a finger splitter that quickly narrows to tips. Switch back to the right splitter and make some strenuous cranks to get into locker fingers(crux). The "existing" approach trail is virtually non-existent and requires some nasty steep shenanigans to reach the cliff. There is a new trail that ascends a mellower, albeit soft, ridgeline with only minor sketchy looseness. To reach the start of the trail drive past the 2nd Meat parking and across a dry wash to an obvious primitive camp site. The trail leaves the site angling towards a large boulder ~200 meters away.

Thanks slim, we had a lot of fun out there this spring. We found a few gems and a lot of adventure. 1st Meat is pretty different from our normal IC fare, imagine if Escalante Canyon and the Colorado National Monument had a love child...

we missed the trail on the way up, but caught it on the way down. from the 2nd meat wall parking spot, hike further southeast along the road and then across the terrace above the ravine. stay on the road as it curls a bit to the right (the sand on the road becomes more of a white color). keep going along the road for about 100 yards, even though you will feel like you are kind of headed too far to the right. keep your eye out for the trail on your left - it goes up to a lone boulder, and then up the hillside from there.

appreciated the fun routes and good anchors up there - good job you guys, looking forward to going back and doing some more routes.

Thanks again slim, I'm glad you had an opportunity to make it up there. If you head up again check out Kebab, Lamb Chop, Taco Flavored Kisses, Menudo and Blood Sausage. These routes put all the others to shame. By the way- the name "Raining Meat" came from all the crap flying down at my belayer (who was a good sport). I was super gripped and bleeding by the time I drilled the anchors, so it's good to hear 5.10 is a bit of a sandbag!
